“On Slut” Is The Topic For The Tenth Virtual Symposium

Ah, the temptations when titling this post… “Team Slut Pulls It Out,” was the first to suggest itself, followed by the affirming “Sluts On Top This Month,” “Sluts Are The People’s Choice,” and even “Sluts More Popular Than Ever.”

No matter which title one goes with – and in the end I went with the workman-like version – “On Slut” was the blogosphere’s top choice for the upcoming virtual symposium’s topic. To those who pimped this vote, thank you!

For those new to the virtual symposium: In short, it’s a simultaneous act of blogging. Here’s how it works: Anybody with a blog on this site is welcome to join in. All choosing to participate will create something – an essay, a cartoon, an erotic story, a memoir, a series of one-line aphorisms, an image collage, a photo montage, a poem, or anything else – relating to “On Slut.” At a pre-arranged time and date (see below) all participants post their contributions.

Want a better sense of how it works – or just some good reads? Here’s a link to the participants’ list from the ninth symposium: Participants List For The Ninth Virtual Symposium Body ImageImagery

Feel free to take the basic idea of “On Slut” and stretch it to as wild an interpretation as you like -- the post should reflect you! The last thing we need is a dozen monotonous texts on the same topic. Anything goes, as long as there is a trace of the original idea in the post.

On the morning of July 26 (this Sunday, for those keeping score), all participants will post their creations. Please, please, post ‘em to your own blogs early: I do want to link to them in a central post here, but I don’t want to be stapled to my desk all day.

I'll be responsible for posting links to your blogs here – I want to make this as effortless for participants as possible! Once you’ve posted, leave a note in the comments section here so I know to link to your submission. I will, of course, post latecomers… people do check back to see whether new participants have joined the symposium. But after the morning of July 26, I may not be updating the list as obsessively.

Additionally, links sometimes take a while to become live. The sooner I can scoop up the link to your contribution, the faster (hopefully) others will be able to click through to it.

As for contributions themselves: The idea is to create something new, as opposed to using posts to respond to other posts (although the comments section will, of course, remain fair game). Leave a note in the blog comments, and I’ll use a post on this blog that day to link to all contributions.

A suggestion: Participants may want to refer to either the virtual symposium or the topic itself in their headline. Not a requirement – there are no requirements, save for originality and participation – but a suggestion which will let the wide blog community know what we’re doing.

This is not a contest. No souvenir mugs will be sent, nor ribbons awarded. The idea here is for those interested to, on a single day, offer an interpretation of a single topic for the sheer fun of it.

By all means, encourage other bloggers to participate – and to let me know they’re doing so through this post, so on the morning of July 26 I can link to their posts. Oh, and please consider this an invitation – if not a request – to the symposium both on your own blogs, and in individual requests to bloggers whom you’d like to see represented. The more the merrier, right? There are some folks with very distinct voices on this site who aren’t yet participating – let’s bring ‘em in and make ‘em one of us, one of us, one of us!

Remember, of course, to keep things in your voice!

Final note: Every symposium, there are a few newbies who contribute posts, and don’t let me know about their contributions (I catch some by watching the “recent posts” feed, but that’s hit or miss). So… once you post, please leave me a note on the master list post, or here! (I get messages about the symposium which are attached to the blog a little faster than the ones which are emailed to me.)

Can’t wait to see the results!

the symposium, the symposium, the symposium... the viewers you bring in may be your own. Can't get more (verbally) naked than that...

That was my intention, but I may have to start carrying a sign.

The glasses are easy, just like sluts. The hat however- just try finding a wool felt hat in the midwest in July. I shopped for one just this week and soon realized my timing was off by a few months. Is there still a Garment District? I may have to pay a visit.

You need to pay a visit regardless of whether there is a Garment Mistrict or not (there is, kinda, but it ain't what it was).

What we REALLY need to find for you is a hatmaker's district. Unfortunately, all the hatmakers have been preoccupied by the audition process for the new reality TV series "Who Wants to Marry A Milliner?"

An unrelated question, if I may: Is there a word limit per any contribution-post?
(For example, not less than 100 and not more than 500.) ?

There is absolutely, positively no lower-word limit to contributions. Actually -- and I'm trying to figure out a way to word this -- I'd love to see more image-based posts, as I view symposium contributions as a package, and being able to "flip" through them and have the words broken up by images enhances the experience.

Part of the reason the "Food" symposium was as successful as it was is that people freely posted relevant images. Go back and look at 'em: The visuals alone are mouth watering.

I'd also love to see people embed, or somehow reference, videos which were custom-made for the symposium. As I've said in the past, there are no awards or souvenir mugs for symposium... but the biggest, most elaborate mug I won't be awarding will be to the first person who offers a relevant video as a symposium contribution.

As for upper-word limits... I think the site has limits on how many words a post can contain. Not sure what it is... or I may be thinking of emails.

But as a guide, I wouldn't go much past 800 words for an essay. Reading online is a very different experience than reading the printed word: It's a lot more tiring.

One of my favorite books on editing is Richard Lanham's "Revising Prose." It's an expensive S.O.B., as academic books are (get it secondhand, if you can: Earlier editions without the software are okay), but it's worth it, worth it, worth it. When I offer writing coaching services, it's one of the books I recommend (right up there with Strunk and White's "Elements of Style").

Lanham takes people who want to become better at editing themselves through a series of exercises which streamline prose. I kid you not: I've seen essays lose 20 percent of their verbiage without losing any substantial meat. It's an electrifying book.

Tired of reading yet? This post is under 350 words. Adjust your thoughts accordingly.

Yes, a video contribution would be fantastic but I'm not the one to win that
imaginary souvenir mug.

It's true, it's a little tiring to read very long posts. That's one of the reasons I'm trying to embed images in mine - to break the monotony.

Thanks so much for answering my question and for your advice. Although I'm not an aspiring writer, these books intrigued me, I might even read them.

But, without consulting the books on editing, it's obvious that corners need to be cut.. There's just too much I want to say ...

Thank you for your help!

It had to be that topic ... I'll pimp it in french but, since I wasn't accurate enough last time
due to the fact I didn't know the meaning of "body image" in english (I'm still unable to translate it !)
my announce will be what it can be ...
I'll try to call on visual contributions too, so the barrier of language can be bypassed.
As usual ... 1) I don't think to have an important echo 2) I'll link the pimping with the program of HNW
(quite unsuccessfully too, sigh ..)

Your interpretation of "body image" in the last symposium was as valid as anybody else's. Body image can mean a number of different things, which is why it's a good topic: I like topics that are nebulous!

As for visual/verbal contributions: You should do whatever sort of contribution you want to post: It is your blog -- you are supposed to post exactly what you want to post!

And... I have noticed that, in the last few months, the number of visitors from France who look at my blog has gone up!

I look forward to whatever you contribute!

There's never an obligation to contribute, of course, but based on the quality of your previous offerings I hope you'll at least mull the topic. I know that several female bloggers are pretty jazzed about the topic, and I'm looking forward to what they write!

Often the topics which are the most challenging provide the most interesting posts. Every symposium there are a few people who say the topic doesn't resonate with them. Some end up participating, some don't. Once one said the topic wasn't sparking anything... and ended up being inspired to post twice.

As an exercise, you might want to mull what you would say without promising yourself that you'll post it. If you think what you come up with is worth sharing, by all means do so: If not, it's a little mental stimulation for someone who has a good mind!

Either way, hope you'll read and enjoy the other contributions!
