“First Dates” Is The Topic For The Fourteenth Virtual Symposium!

“First Dates” Is The Topic For The Fourteenth Virtual Symposium!

“First Dates” was the blogosphere’s top choice for the upcoming virtual symposium’s topic, narrowly edging out “Fetishes” – a topic which will very, very likely appear as a choice again very soon. To those who pimped this vote, thank you! And a special congratulations to [blog Darling_Annette] for suggesting the topic. (Folks might enjoy checking out her blog: She’s been creating a series of photo-cartoon promotions which are a lot of fun. You'll have to scroll down a bit, but they're there.)

For those new to the virtual symposium: In short, it’s a simultaneous act of blogging. Here’s how it works: Anybody with a blog on this site is welcome to join in. All choosing to participate will create something – an essay, a cartoon, an erotic story, a memoir, a series of one-line aphorisms, an image collage, a photo montage, a poem, or anything else – relating to “International Intrigue.” At a pre-arranged time and date (see below) all participants post their contributions.

Want a better sense of how it works – or just some good reads? Here’s a link to the participants’ list from the thirteenth symposium: Participants In The Thirteenth Virtual Symposium Sapiosexuality Intersection Of Smarts And Sex

Feel free to take the basic idea of “First Dates” and stretch it to as wild an interpretation as you like -- the post should reflect you! The last thing we need is a dozen monotonous texts on the same topic. Anything goes, as long as there is a trace of the original idea in the post.

On the morning of November 29 (the Sunday immediately after the American Thanksgiving holiday, for those keeping score), all participants will post their creations. Please, please, post ‘em to your own blogs early: I do want to link to them in a central post here, but I don’t want to be stapled to my desk all day.

I'll be responsible for posting links to your blogs here – I want to make this as effortless for participants as possible! Once you’ve posted, leave a note in the comments section here so I know to link to your submission. I will, of course, post latecomers… people do check back to see whether new participants have joined the symposium. But after the morning of November 29, I may not be updating the list as obsessively, especially if I’m still digesting turkey.

Additionally, links sometimes take a while to become live. The sooner I can scoop up the link to your contribution, the faster (hopefully) others will be able to click through to it.

As for contributions themselves: The idea is to create something new, as opposed to using posts to respond to other posts (although the comments section will, of course, remain fair game). Leave a note in the blog comments, and I’ll use a post on this blog that day to link to all contributions.

A suggestion: Participants may want to refer to either the virtual symposium or the topic itself in their headline. Not a requirement – there are no requirements, save for originality and participation – but a suggestion which will let the wide blog community know what we’re doing.

This is not a contest. No souvenir mugs will be sent, nor ribbons awarded. The idea here is for those interested to, on a single day, offer an interpretation of a single topic for the sheer fun of it.

By all means, encourage other bloggers to participate – and to let me know they’re doing so through this post, so on the morning of November 29 I can link to their posts. Oh, and please consider this an invitation – if not a request – to the symposium both on your own blogs, and in individual requests to bloggers whom you’d like to see represented. The more the merrier, right? There are some folks with very distinct voices on this site who aren’t yet participating – let’s bring ‘em in and make ‘em one of us, one of us, one of us!

Remember, of course, to keep things in your voice!

Every symposium, there are a few newbies who contribute posts, and don’t let me know about their contributions (I catch some by watching the “recent posts” feed, but that’s hit or miss). So… once you post, please leave me a note on the master list post, or here! (I get messages about the symposium which are attached to the blog a little faster than the ones which are emailed to me.)

Can’t wait to see the results!

the symposium, the symposium, the symposium... the viewers you bring in may be your own. Can't get more (verbally) naked than that...

Final note: When the page with all the contributors goes live, please consider adding the link to your post, even if the contribution has already gone live. Doing so allows people to readily access all the other offerings… which is, after all, one of the purposes of this exercise.

And they say begging pathetically isn't a good strategy - but it seems to have worked for getting the topic I preferred .

My first response to this was denied by the site powers that be because I referenced a banned topic. Huh? All I did was congratulate you for an excellent suggestion!

I'm trying again.... but if "First Dates" -- which was an excellent suggestion, and thank you -- is something we can't mention (I can't imagine that "thank you" is a banned phrase, but you never know) we're going to have to figure this out...

If I beg enough can you request the people post their submissions in larger font sizes? Like in #3.

I'm passing along the suggestion... but I think you'll find people fall on various sides of this. Personally, I find the larger size distracting and, at times, vertigo-inspiring. But that's just one participant's particular perversion.

There is a way to increase the magnification of any web page: Hold down the Ctrl key while tapping the + button (or the - button to reduce the size).

I'm reluctant to add any more requirements to the symposium. I'm really trying to keep the process as simple as possible... but if the Ctrl button really doesn't work, I'll put it out there. Fair 'nuff?

Thoughts, folks? Are the fonts here in need of a kick in the pants?

Thanks for the Ctrl / + - button thing, I wasn’t aware of that, it does improve it some. “the larger size distracting and . . . “ fwiw #3 is only 2 sizes above the default.

I understand about adding more requirements to the symposium and keeping the process as simple as possible. This is just a request to whomever can do it.

It's easy enough to magnify the page, and I do when necessary, but my posts are size three because it's easier for me to see. I can read the smallest font used on the site, but it's just easier in a larger size.

What I really do dislike are dark backgrounds and dark font color. I have to highlight them to read them at all. "Black is Black" is a very cool song but a lousy choice for post colors.

*Sigh* The worst thing about people pimping the symposium is that the symposium looooooves it. Can't get enough of it.

Kinda slutty on the symposium's part, if you ask me. But then, I don't consider slut a pejorative, so there you go...

The whole argument of text over design is one long waged between editors and magazine designers, and I doubt it'll be resolved here... but highlighting to read is certainly one way of dealing with it...

One look at the New Yorker tells you what side of the argument I'm on. The New Yorker has been the greatest boon to human civilization since fermented beverages.

Oh, absolutely, but for follow-up material The Atlantic and Harper's Magazine offer a fine backup, especially when those high-fiber diets start kicking in...

But trust me, you do not want me singing in the Wilderness... aside from my lack of tonal ability, I've developed a fascination with "Camarillo Brillo" of late, and would chant it over and over and over and over...

I'm all for a larger font - it's easier to read. I use size 2 for that very reason.

I usually skip posts where the background is dark and the font size is small. My eyes mean more to me than pleasure of reading something that could be very good. But, I'll never know if it was that good...

If folks feel strongly about this, I might put something up in the introduction space. To my eyes, size 3 is a little large... but size 2 on your blog looks quite nice.

What say folks?

Here ya go; wrote the post, pimped this post and the one before it and mentioned the other post as well {13th}. Not even sure this is what you were talking about, but here it is. As I said in my post, since I mentioned the 13th symposium one, I'll be able to go to it soon and read through the different links, to see what I missed. It may take a bit to post, I forgot to check the font size and have to go back in, but don't have the 'background' stuff, and usually {but haven't lately} post in royal blue.

Funny how it works.... There are times when a topic excites me but I have trouble finding words. And, there are times when a topic leaves me indifferent but words come from nowhere with ease.

I wasn't particularly inspired by this month's selection of topics, haven't even voted. When topic was finally selected, I didn't feel any thrill and thought it would be difficult to write about it. Even thought about sitting this one out. So, I decided to spend an hour or so to think and make some notes that could be used later should I feel like participating.

What do you know - I'm done and ready to post. It's probably flat, but I'm not going back and changing anything. It is what it is.

Ah, the selections aren't going to be aces every month... although different folks are turned on by different batches!

While the community aspect is definitely the most important, I do believe there are folks who get jazzed over the exercise of writing about something they're, uh, not jazzed about!

Trust me, as an editor and writer I've written about subjects I didn't care about... and had people mis-attribute personal views based on articles I've penned for a specific audience. Yeah, I'm a slut AND a whore: I happen to like putting food over my head and a roof on my table.

The symposium offers a good way of doing that -- writing about uncomfortable topics, or topics one might otherwise never explore.

Kinda nifty, ain't it?

Annie:

I look forward to your contribution, as always, and I am quite grateful for your announcement.

If you happen to reach Gntilhom before he reappears, please give him my best wishes.

I can't wait to see what you write!

I'll be putting up the symposium master page next Sunday, November 29... so you've got time to edit! You might want to remind me closer to next weekend... I do tend to get a little frenzied on symposium day...

Thank you!

In terms of incorporating your link into the master list, don't worry about that: It's my responsibility to scoop up links on symposium day.

But for general reference: Every post is assigned a seven-digit number. You can find that number at the bottom of each post, surrounded by the word "post" and some square brackets. If you copy that and paste it into another blog post, the words will eventually become a live link. Be sure to include the square brackets as well.

When you contribute to the symposium, you can test this by linking to the master list, which will have its own seven-digit number.

Looking forward to reading your contribution!

Thank you! As you know, links to French contributions to the virtual symposium tend to take a while to go live: I hope that by posting yours early, when the rest of the contributions are put up on Sunday, November 29, everyone will be able to enjoy yours right alongside the others.

I look forward to viewing what you posted!

Merci!

I'm delighted to have you join us! I'll be putting up the master list soon: At the bottom is a little code which reads [blog xxxxxxx], with numbers replacing those exes. Just copy and paste that -- including the square brackets and the word "blog" wherever you want it to appear, and eventually, per the site's good graces, the link will go live...

Greetings all!

I know it's been awhile since my I posted. But I figured on a lazy Sunday during Thanksgiving weekend, I'd fiddle around on the laptop and see what I come up with.

For your viewing pleasure, my entry for the 14th Symposium.

Hopefully, it's something easy to digest, like last Thursday's turkey.

Sorry I'm late.

I wrote a post about a first date with a fellow blogger over five years ago. Thought this would be a nice way to revisit it.
