When things are named, that's when it can all go sideways, dependent of place and time. Take the word fag... No no, I mean cigarette.

Interesting how a slut can be both a compliment, and a horrid insult. lol

I thought this was about being proud of the title I wonder why
her family doesn't grasp it in the same manner.

So would you name your child slut?

Using more than all the road!

Context counts. One of the best reporters I know is proud to be called a hack -- by other reporters. He knows that when his peers use it, they're saying it out of respect for his ability to bang out stories.

But if an outsider were to use the term, there'd be blood. Or, at very least, a flung inkwell.

Good point, and good contribution to the symposium. Thank you! But one question remains... if "one of your lovers" refers to herself as a slut, what does that make you?

Stop in, read, and offer comments at my "swinging as seen in the media" blog, "Confessions of a Lifestyle Man" humorlife, which is also the home of the monthly virtual symposium. New post: The Virtual Symposium Returns Lets Pick A Topic

What a word can become when extended ... right. One can be proud to be a slut when she wants to praise her lover.
But when it hurts someone's morals, she'll be ashamed.
What's more, it can have a special meaning in french for a boat, la Marie-salope, the dredge. 'Salope=slut in french).
Of course, one may think that it sucks the dirt of the river ...

Very well said and so true and much of a double standard there can be.

I sent an Angel to watch over you last night, it returned in a hurry. I asked why, it said "Angels can't watch porn." Thanks for fucking traumatizing my fucking Angel!

Don't bother trying to figure me out. Not even the little voices in my head understand me. It's pointless!

Like you, I am a lover of the subtlety of language.
Yes, you can use some words one way in a certain context and it is all right.
My friends that I was living with just before meeting my ex-husband, called each other slut, whore, ho, bitch, all with affection. I never did get into doing this back, but I was fine with being called those things.
Recently, I accused my ex as thinking of me as a "money grubbing bitch". In that context, I would have been insulted. Same word, different situation.
Great post,
Kk

No one in real life tried to insult me by calling me a slut, but a few male-friends use this word as a term of endearment with me. And I don't mind.
But of course, it all depends on context. When a stranger responds to polite rejection by calling me a slut, I go for the kill.

It never is that easy. It always depends on what the words mean to someone or someones and the emotion behind them. For her mom, I would guess it's the disappointment and disapproval expressed in the word. For her, especially with you, it means a type of freedom to be what she chooses to be. Translation of the word really is everything.

Specific
Lingual
Usage
Taints

...in one context a word means This, change the context and the word is just Mean.

It does indeed depend very much on context and intent. Nicely said.

Sometimes we give ourselves a title just to reduce the sting in case anyone else calls us by that same title. It is a survival skill.

Intent may not be everything but it counts for a hell of a lot! I look at the current usage of the word slut by women amongst friends similarly to the usage of the words faggot, dyke, queer, and so on by other "minority" groups,...a reclaiming of the language,...taking the sting out by giving it a positive connotation amongst ourselves
