Well I think you have done pretty well to be honest to have managed to get 6 years of life out of it.

My last 5 or 6 laptops have averaged 2 to 3 years each before slowing down to a crawl and just totally refusing to light up in 2 of them. And it is a real pain to have to start from scratch again on a nice bright shining new one.

But then it seems you are using a MAC which I have not tried. But I have hopped brands in the hope of finding a one that is durable.

I believe it is accumulated junk that causes the problem, most of which you don't even know you have got. And theoretically wiping your machine clean and reverting to the factory settings should fix it. But this still means that you have to reload all your software and data and even then I am pretty certain the PC makers have that base covered too to ensure they continue to sell new machines.

Have you tried a program like mackeeper to rid the hard drive of junk?

Hi J
Bummer...
Perhaps it may just be that your computer's current operating system requires more memory and computer chip processing power than exists in your computer.

On the other hand, you may have a virus...

Either way you really need to backup any file you cannot easily replace...

Sorry...

Oooop, sounds like its time for a new one, save what you need, before you need, I had to dump everything recently, and go back to factory settings, that really helped speed things up, got rid of a lot of stuff i don't use or want that was bogging it down, might not need a new one if you can clean things up, just the computer mind you.

Sorry for the frustration MissK. It's no good when the computer wants to die! I've had more trouble with monitors than anything else. They don't seem to want to last as long as the hardware. But I think a new one is in order...I wouldn't try and save it if you can afford a new one.

Probably best to go new than to try and fix the old one. Just be sure to get something compatible.

I haven't had much luck with those PC speed up programs, but they aren't terribly expensive and might help, junk on your Mac can slow it down a lot, but at that point it is usually wiser to move up while you can still save your stuff on the new one.

I recommend Norton 360 with the cleaner tool an extra $10. I trust to providers and Norton is the best hands down. I have restore several dead disc drives over the years using tools like 'Mace', PC Doctor etc.

I think the real problem is malware/spyware and torjans in your registry. They send info to there original sender. Slowing down every key stroke in the process. This can only be cleaned by a sweeper and then maintained with a good Firewall like Norton.

However there is something to be said about older computers with low memories to begin with. So a new computer would be faster just by more memory. The cost $600 for average computer. Norton is about $70 and may save you the other $500. If not your Norton will transfer to your new computer with no additional cost,

Been there Dune that.

Sounds like you just were running out of hard drive space. You need to keep like 10% of it free so the system can do its work. The less you get, the slower it'll run. Glad it's running better now. It's just like your home, if there's too much stuff in it, you can't get around.
Make sure you have at least a backup, preferably two, one offsite.

I am a Mac guy - I have been since the days of 9" black and white displays on the Mac SE.
I am using an early 2009 right now.

If you haven't upgraded to Mavericks yet I would suggest that be done. Upgrade RAM to 8 Gb.

(That should bring back all the performance of a 19 year old penis.)

    Quoting  :

MacCleaner/MacKeeper are not helpful for you. They may not do anything bad, but they'll bog down your system.
As far as stuff like defragging etc., the Mac generally takes care of that itself. If you download software and try it out and are concerned about stuff left over from it, search for Hazel. It's awesome. Throw an app in the trash and it tells you what else is still on the computer from it and asks if you want to throw that away too.
For anti-malware stuff, Sophos has a free download. Just run it once in a while, don't let it run all the time.
This had been Mac Moment with Scott.

A new one would be cheaper than getting the old one fixed.

See what's eating up all of your memory: videos, music, photos are the biggest culprits. Get a program like TuneUpMyMac to clean it of extraneous junk files. Then check your operating system and other applications. You may have to move some files to external thumb drives, etc. Back up all of your files...just in case.

sometimes laptops and pcs do collect junk, some virus programs allow you to clean ups, but be careful not to get one that will do harm, check with cnet or pc mags for suggestions, and then be ready to pay for the full cleanup
