Lets not sugarcoat it. The real question is not whether they cannot love you. It is whether they wont.
If your partners brain is ravaged by cancer or Alzheimers, they are truly incapable. You stay. You love. You grieve. You become the keeper of a flame they can no longer tend. That is devotion.
But if they are fully capable and simply choose not to meet you in the depths, what then? Maybe they express love through loyalty, parenting, or quiet companionship. Maybe they are emotionally constipated. Maybe they are just not wired for the kind of love you crave. That is not incapacity. That is incompatibility. And it is a judgment call.
Now lets talk about sex. Because aging does not erase desire. It sharpens it.
A 73-year-old womans husband is incoherent in a care facility. She still loves him. But she is lonely. Should she wait indefinitely, or find pleasure while she still can?
A 70-year-old womans husband is paralyzed. He wants her to sleep with a friend, while he watches. She craves romance, not just release. Should she say no to him, or yes to herself?
A 76-year-old woman has not had sex in 20 years. Her husband is disinterest, has shaken her love, but her body still longs. Should she stay faithful to a ghost of intimacy?
Widows in their 70s and 80s are choosing pleasure over propriety. They are not chasing relationships. They are chasing sensation. And they are doing it quietly, defiantly, in retirement communities across the country.
I have lived in a bubble for 47 years. I thought love was simple. I thought sex had rules. But aging rewrites the script. It asks harder questions. It demands deeper honesty.
So if you love someone who can not or will not love you back the way you need. Ask yourself: Are you staying out of loyalty, or fear? Are you sacrificing your body to preserve a story? Are you still in love or just in character?
Reminds me of the song: Walk a mile in my shoes. Don not criticize or abuse, until you have walked a mile in my shoes.

You’ve written an interesting post: honest and filled with thought-provoking questions. To sum up my view: honesty in a marriage means that, no matter the age or the reason, if one partner unilaterally decides to break the agreement they made when they became a couple: for example, by no longer being interested in sex, then the other has every right to seek elsewhere what has been unfairly denied to them.
I’m not a typical wife, since my marriage is far from conventional, but that’s how I see it. 😊
