I saw Barbie on Sunday evening, it was great.
There have been a lot of Barbie history back stories in the media and they all are promoting the idea that Barbie was the first "grown-up" doll, and before that gîrls only played with bâby dolls. The first scene in the movie repeats that narrative in an amusing way, showing gîrls playing with their bâby dolls (one looking VERY bored as she ironed doll clothes), and then throwing them away to the 2001 Space Odyssey theme when Barbie appears on the scene.
WELL. I had lunch with my besties yesterday. One of them is about ten years older than me. She brought a doll to show us that was hers when she was a chîld. The doll was only manufactured for one year - 1957 - so she would have been about tên. The doll was a spin-off from another semi-grownup doll called Sweet Sue. My friend's doll was called Sweet Sue Sophisticate.
Note the description - high heel feet! Sweet Sue was much larger than the Barbies to come. I think her face was still sort of "chîldish" and the eyes that close when the doll lays down also seemed taken from bâby doll design.
Sweet Sue's clothing had gotten lost somewhere along the way (LOL) so the night before our get-together, my friend sewed an evening gown for her:

Crazy, right? I kind of want to send this to the NY Times and tell them their fact checkers fell down on the job.

@smartasswoman well the evidence would suggest that British rags either don’t or are deliberately posting half truths and down right lies. However as the vast majority are now owned by Right wing Oligarchs protecting their vested interests, go figure as they say!
@OldSaltySeaman now adays it is either the same skript, or the "fact check" checked another news source instead of actually doing there job. Shame really
Sweet Sue looks like a pubescent girl dressed up in her mom's clothes...not quite at Barbie's level. But that's just this Barbie's opinion.
I agree with you...like I said, her face still looks a bit childish, not like a "sophisticated” woman.

I honestly think they took a baby doll head, gave it long hair and plopped it onto a more grownup body.

Someone posted the other day - JN maybe? saying they had heard back from Customer Service that longer posts take longer to get approved. Apparently it's super easy to review a post that says "come fuck me", not so easy to screen something that has actual content. 😂

Ricca is the Japanese version of Barbie. Originally, she was proportioned like a typical Japanese girl, big head and tiny body. I think that's changed over the years. I probably still have mine somewhere boxed up in the closet.
I was amazed that my friend has hung on to this doll for 65 years! I have a few of my childhood books (Nancy Drew etc) but aside from that all childhood things are gone.
I love Barbie in a thong! And the 2001 parody is hilarious.
There were many fun references to other movies, but that one was definitely the most obvious!

Barbie officially debuted on March 9, 1959, at the American International Toy Fair in New York City.
I grew up with Barbie, Ken, Skipper, Midge & Alan dolls. My Mom & grandmother knit and sewed outfits and accessories. In later years, my sister-in-law worked for Mattel and had to go to Barbie school.
Despite all the hype, I still am not interested in seeing the movie.
I thought it was really interesting that Mattel signed off on the movie - it wasn’t totally flattering! I guess the dollar bills were in their eyes.
