A few months ago my state had a design competition for a new state flag. There were some... unusual ... entries. One of the them featured our state bird, the loon. I mean, they're pretty cool birds. They swim around with their babies on their back. They can dive really deep for long periods of time - it's fun to watch them go under on the lake and pop back up somewhere else entirely. Their call is one of the most haunting things ever.
And... they have red eyes.
So the flag entry showed the loon with red laser beams coming from it's eyes. Very funny, but sadly, it didn't win.
But in an amazing epilogue, The St. Paul Public Library is offering a new library card design with the laser loon:
I'm pretty psyched. I actually lost my library card ages ago and have been using extra little card they give you to put on your key chain, to check out my books. So when the current card expires soon, it's definitely being replaced by a laser eye loon.

As for V-day, the plans (which were always tentative) have fallen through. Perhaps I'll get some decadent take-out and indulge in a gummy. 😃

Had not heard about the flag or the card. What a great thing for the library to do!
St. Paul is usually the boring/stodgy Twin City, so I'm pretty proud of the library for coming up with this!

I rem researching loons after watching On Golden Pond . Beautiful birds with a distinctive sound.

It's Ash Wednesday and I am married to a fairly devout Catholic so I think we're having fish sticks. How romantic! LOL
That's funny, when I went to my afternoon Pilates class the manager was talking about how he was going to McD's for some Filet o' Fish (for same reason).

@smartasswoman We got some frozen breaded shrimp to have with the frozen fish fillets. I also opened a bottle of peach moscato that was tasty enough and drinking out of an actual wine glass made the meal feel slightly more elevated. LOL

It's probably one of the worst nights of the year to go out, along with Mother's Day, Father's Day etc.
HWD's older daughter was going to be playing music at a nearby venue, and younger daughter thought that HWD should bring me. I was up for it, and a little bit excited to meet his daughters, but his ex was against the idea. Even though SHE was going to be bringing HER new boyfriend. HWD opted to avoid drama for the daughters' sake. If and when I do meet them, it's probably better that it's NOT an occasion that the ex is at, anyway. 🤷🏻♀️

It is kind of cool, isn't it? I just found the laser loon flag design and it actually showed a loon making laser eyes at a fish. Somebody at the library made a good leap of thought to change that to a symbol for reading.

Meaning evolution or the Creator, I guess, depending on how you lean.
Used to love hearing the early morning and sunset call of loons when at the cottage.
In early April and May, adult loons fly to their breeding grounds to establish their territory and search for a mate. Did you know the gestation period for a female loon is an only four weeks.
How lucky for her that she only needs to be pregnant for four weeks! 😉
I really enjoy hearing the loons too, when I'm visiting my sister's lake home.
