Interesting topic but damn those are ugly choices.
I wouldn’t go so far as to call them ugly, but definitely boring.
"Public commentary was not favorable" 😂
I hate all of them much more than the vastly non-PC current one, but forced to vote I's gone with the North Star, blue symbolizing rivers and lakes, white symbolizing snow and auroras. The ones with the stripes remind me of South American or African banana republics.
@staci_19702 funny you should mention that, the right wing conspiracists were trying to make the argument that the final selection looks too much like Somalia's flag.
I’m no expert but it’s so bland. If nothing else it will be recognizable.
SO bland. Not gonna argue with you.
@smartasswoman
We will survive 😆
That is kind of bland...dang! I've had a few flags of interest in my life, born in Maryland, moved to Florida, now in Delaware.
What does the Delaware flag look like? Simple graphic, or picture that tells a story?
@CarriedBack oh that is definitely not boring!
@smartasswoman you asked....
Adopted on July 24, 1913, the Delaware state flag has a background of colonial blue surrounding a diamond of buff color in which the coat of arms of the state is placed. Below the diamond are the words “December 7, 1787,” indicating the day on which Delaware was the first state to ratify the United States constitution. Because of this action, Delaware became the first state in the Union, and is, therefore, accorded the first position in such national events as presidential inaugurations. According to members of the original commission established to design the flag, the shades of buff and colonial blue represent those of the uniform of General George Washington. Inside the diamond, the flag recognizes the importance of commerce {the ship} and agriculture {wheat, corn, the ox and the farmer} to the state. Tribute is also paid to the revolutionary war soldiers. The words in the ribbon banner read Liberty and Independence.
@CarriedBack it's such a eye-popper, I've always liked it the best of all my states.
The other factor is the cost to print and manufacture. Having something like the original flag will cost more because of all the colors. The new flag looks like a cheaper way to have a flag.
That's a very good point, I'm sure the original wasn't easy to print.
What is the ‘French connection’ on the original flag?
Google says: "The idea of Minnesota being the Star of the North, L'Étoile du Nord, came from our first state Governor Henry Sibley in 1858. At that time, Minnesota was the northern most state in the union and the French fur trade was big business. Having the state motto in French honored that connection."
Should have just gone with a solid blue flag at this point. Call it the land of 10,000 lakes flag.
That would be the logical extension of the tinkering that the flag commission did!
I certainly don’t want to be a Debbi Downer, but uh….i agree with the critics.
I do too, for the most part. I especially laughed at comment that they all look like they're from the NYT Tiles game, since I play that every day.
Personally, I liked the one with the blue and white waves. It had more personality than the other ones, yet the design was simple and easy on the eye.
Are the officials trying to say that Minnesota is a bland and uninteresting place to live and visit?
That one does have more personality, but to me it looks the most like a corporate logo - which, if it WERE for a company, would end up getting revised in five or ten years. Like, the swirlies could end up looking very dated.
Hmmm, I'd say leave the flag like it is. The new and improved one is very blah and reminiscent of the Star of David and says nothing Minnesota. The one with the yellow "star" and the swooshy lines is my choice but its still very average.
Hm, I don’t see it as being like the Star of David but I do agree that it’s blah.
They are super bland and just scream ad agency boredom. At least the old flag was interesting
Yes, most of them do look like an ad agency designed them. Especially the one with the swirlies.
I am sorry to say it appears to me to be another waste of public money.
As I was researching this, I think I saw somewhere that the selection commission had a budget of $35,000 which is actually somewhat reasonable, as these things go.
But, as mc noted, there will be the cost of making new flags.
