My first thought about furthest north was Quebec but I realized that Copper Harbor, MI is further north.
The furthest south I've been was Nassau, Bahamas. I don't go south often. But if you want to see young and thin, I found a picture. It was 1973 and I was a month shy of 18.
You look very demure, very mindful in that picture BJ!
I know you already looked this up, but for benefit of the others, Copper Harbor MI is 47.5 degrees north. Nassau is 25 degrees north.
Farthest South would be Brisbane Australia. Farthest North, the actual North Pole.
@OldStandardDudeX Yep, submarine I was on took a few scientists on a trip to the Artic for some science experiments. It was a unique trip.
I do believe that having been to the North Pole (90 degrees north) and Brisbane (27.4 degrees south) might give you the biggest range so far. Although wait - lindoboy may have tied or exceeded you, depending on where he was in Iceland.
@smartasswoman oh well could add that we circled the polar ice cap as well. We were mapping the ocean floor then. Does that help? Lol.
The furthest North I have been was the Arctic Circle in Norway. The furthest South was Trivandrum Southern India.
farthest north - Anchorage Alaska; farthest south - Melbourne Florida
South - San Antonio TX (yeah...lame)
North - Anchorage AK
Not lame at all - there are some people who've never been more than one or two states away from home.
Ohhhh....made me pull out the old atlas. Furthest north would have been Reykjavik, Iceland at 64.12 I suppose and I thought Sucre, Boliva would have been the southmost. But then I went searching the South Pacific maps for New Zealand. And I was as far South as the Milford Sound at a -44.64. I will have to see if I can find any pictures....although the Iceland pictures would have been slides...... red chuckles.....
NZ would have been my furthest south before I did the South America trip. Isn't Milford Sound spectacular?
@smartasswoman The Sound was quite wonderful. I spent the night out on the boat tucked in the quiet of the Sound...felt sort of cozy. My partner didn't think she was up for the boat part and stayed back at the Milford Lodge/Hotel.
@redswallow777 I did the one night cruise as well. Alas, my bed consisted of a very thin mattress on a hard wooden shelf. And I was coming down with something, so spent most of the night awake, shivering. The views the next day were lovely though!
@smartasswoman Ohhh....I do have memories now of less than comfortable beds.....chuckles.....oh how we can color some things with time.
The furthest north I have been was to Bayfield, Wisconsin on Lake Superior. I was going to say the furthest south I have been was Corpus Christi, Texas but then rethought, checked and Altas and revise that to just south of Fort Meyers, Florida.
You sound like you have done a fair bit of traveling. The pictures here are lovely.
Well, you may not be as young or thin as you were 20 years ago but I am certain you have have become an even more interesting person now than you were then. That certainly aces out young and thin in my book.
Hugs
Bayfield is lovely! (and is a latitude of 46.8 north). Fort Myers is 26.4 north.
And thanks for your kind words!
South, Costa Rica. I have not made it past the equator (yet). North, not sure but I think Iceland. I have flown over the top but that does not count.
Iceland is quite far north! 63-67 degrees north, depending on where you were. I never thought about flying over the top, I guess I've probably done that too!
Costa Rica is 9.7 degrees north, so pretty darn close to the equator.
@smartasswoman We did the ring road in Iceland, so about as far north as it goes. No sunset.
North: Banff, Alberta
South: Kailua-Kona, Hawaii (on the Big Island)
Banff, Alberta = 51.2 degrees north.
Kailua-Kona = 19.6 degrees north.
@smartasswoman Correction: I have been to Peyto Lake, Alberta which is 51.7255ยฐ N latitude
Great set of pics. ๐
thanks! Not going to share with us?
@smartasswoman
Montrรฉal North is pretty far North... I think.๐ค
People give a shite? lol ๐
I've been across my country. and yours; East and West. Cuba ๐จ๐บ and Jamaica ๐ฏ๐ฒ, South. And James Bay and further โ strange Inuit namesโ up North. โ๏ธ
@Paulxx001 fun fact, Montreal and my town are pretty close in latitude. You're 45.5 degrees north, I'm 44.95.
And nah, I don't think anyone gives a shit...I guess my brain is just weird to find this stuff interesting.
@smartasswoman
And here.... I had my hopes up... that someone would. ๐ถ๐
@smartasswoman
I... did not know that. ๐
@smartasswoman Three cheers for people with brains that are weird like yours.
North is Canada. I cannot remember the name of the town. Not far from the US.
South would be Cozumel, Mexico.
I can't give you a latitude for "somewhere in Canada".
But Cozumel is 20.4 degrees North.
Great shots!
Farthest north Anaktuvuk Pass, AK, north of the Arctic Circle. Farthest south Sao Paulo.
I was all ready to declare you the north winner at 68.1 degrees north - until the guy weighed in who's been to the North Pole. ๐ฒ
Sรฃo Paulo is 23.5 degrees south.
@smartasswoman It occurred to me to look up the latitudes, but I was lazy.
@CleavageFan4U I got started on it and then I decided to do it for everybody. Probably a poor use of my time. ๐
@smartasswoman Now I just want to know what the two winners get?
@CleavageFan4U bragging rights? ๐
@smartasswoman Fair enough.
Buenos Aires, Argentina- south Quebec, Canada- north
I loved Buenos Aires! 34.6 degrees south. Quebec City is 46.8 degrees north.
@smartasswoman I never looked that up. Thanks for the information. I probably will use this information in the future. I had a great time both places. Been back to Quebec a few times. South America was a onetime trip. When Hartford had an NHL team, I would go to games in Montreal and Quebec. Never been to Canada in summer. The trip to Argentina was also during their winter too. Uruguay and Argentina, same trip. They actually had snow for the first time in something like 60 years, when I was there. I had to teach children how to make snowballs and snowmen. Local dogs were going crazy in the snow. The snow was maybe best part of the trip. it was a new experience for most of the people.
@ROBIN06790 fun! I was there in November so it was Argentinian springtime and the jacarandas were in bloom.
I haven't been further south than the Caribbean... I'd have to say the Island of Roatan of the coast of Honduras is the farthest south I've traveled. North would be Skagway Alaska.
Roatan is 16.3 degrees north, now you just need to get to the other side of the equator.
Skagway is 59.4 degrees north. Alaska is on my list for some day...
@smartasswoman dang, so I guess I technically haven't been "south" yet!
Interesting question. Furthest north has been Reykjavik in Iceland though I went to a few places north of that. Furthest south has been Harare in Zimbabwe.
Furthest east (Hong Kong for me) and west (Monterey, Mexico) may be also interesting questions.
Iceland ranges from 63-67 degrees north and will be my new furthest north after this fall.
Harare Zimbabwe - 17.8 degrees south.
I didn't want to complicate things with east and west haha! I think east for me would be New Zealand, since it's just on the other side of the international date line. West, I guess, would be Cannon Beach in Oregon.
Furthest south would be Jamaica in 2000. Furthest north would probably be Bar Harbor, Maine although I have also been to Door County, WI and looking at a map, it is hard to tell which is further north. I think we went to Maine for our 15th anniversary so 2010 and I went to Door County on a day trip when my sis first moved to WI in 1996.
Jamaica - 18.1 degrees north. Door County - 45.1 degrees north. Bar Harbor Maine - 44.4 degrees north. Door County for the win.
Great post!! Great photos
Furthest south - Punta Arenas tambien, starting point for a road trip up to the glaciers, Torres del Paine and into Argentina. I stood on that very bank and watched avalanches on the mountains. Did you do the walk up to the lake at the base of the Torres? Stunning!
Furthest north - (other than flying east/west) Iceland. An amazing island.
Wow we were on basically the same trip! Yes, I did do that walk. It was quite an adventure because of the strong winds - maybe gusts up to 40 or 50 mph? I had to bend over at times to present less of a profile for the wind.
I'm going to Iceland this September so that will be my new furthest north.
Punta Arenas - 53.2 degrees south. Iceland - 63-67 degrees north.
Since Michigan seems to be a tad further north than Hokkaido, Michigan is the furthest north, and Caribbeans I went to on a cruise is furthest south.
I had to look up latitudes to figure out what was the furthest north.
If we're talking the UP of Michigan, that's 46.5 degrees north. Hokkaido is 43.2 degrees north, so yes, Michigan for the win.
@superbjversion2, I had to do the same for my furthest north. I was pretty sure about furthest south, but double checked Punta Arenas vs Torres del Paine park.
@smartasswoman
I've passed through 45th parallel north in Michigan. The equivalent in Japan is close to the northern tip of Hokkaido and I've only been to the southern parts of the prefecture.
