I think a blogger should disclose that they've used AI to craft their post. A bit like any one should disclose their sources in compiling what they've written. Otherwise, it's a form of deceit.
But I also realise that as AI becomes the norm, almost like a personal assistant, people will see AI as an extension to themselves, a bit like Google, and that no attribution is needed. We're entering a brave new world!
PS. I can honestly say that no AI, and not even Google nor Wikipedia, was used in the compilation of my comment. The fool I am!
Youโre right that itโs a changing world, and that using these tools will likely become normalized fairly quickly. You and I will be the lone curmudgeons. ๐
Iโd like to think I wouldnโt use it (especially considering the carbon impact of AI). But if it ever becomes so sophisticated that it could mimic my writing style, all bets are off.
it's pretty easy to me to tell the difference. What I do is Look out for red flags. doesn't really matter what one happens to be reading.
@DareU2play2 It is quite easy but I suspect it will be less easy as time goes on.
Consider the rules of AI, each is different in its own right but there are constraints that affect all of them. That is all the AI models that were created with the intention to deal with the broad public as a language models service like chat gpt, meta, Siri. they got rules.
@DareU2play2 I accept there are rules, or at least codes, governing AI. But AI is probably going to get more sophisticated, and it's already quite sophisticated. I worry that humans won't be able to tell whether it's AI or not. For some, that may not be a problem. For me, the Luddite I am, it is a problem.
I agree - using something like grammarly to fix your poor punctuation or sentence structure is one thing, but full on writing it for you seems a bit sketch. I recently figured out that someone I had been chatting with was probably using AI to create his responses because he went from stuff like "I want to fuck you" to "It sounds like you appreciate connection with your intimate partners...." LOL smh...maybe I should give him credit for at least recognizing that his writing was not getting him anywhere?
That's hilarious! I suppose now I'll need to be suspicious if someone approaches me in a extra Sensitive New Age Guy way.
Itโs the same as those who copy online articles and post them as their own.
Agree. I try to give credit when directly quoting an article. Sometimes it's hard to give credit here in the blogs when they don't want you to mention other sites, but then I'll at least say "I found this in an article online" or whatever.
@smartasswoman In the past, I privately reached out to someone to let them know they were breaching copyright laws and violating this site's Terms of Use by presenting poems and articles as their own. Although they claimed ignorance at first, they soon resumed the same behaviour. As a result, I chose to stop reading their posts.
@sexyldy1000 it was kind of you to reach out to them privately instead of calling them out on the post. I don't blame you for not wanting to read more of that when they kept it up - I am pretty much the same.
@smartasswoman I have scrolled past their posts, and was not surprised to notice itโs obvious they are now using AI.
Yep, I know where you're coming from. I've thought about it and then realized there was nothing at stake. Many don't know how to be understood; AI will accomplish THAT goal.
I use AI to check my spelling and grammarโ but besides that?
That faux-intelligence will never understand slang, sarcasm, homonyms, synonyms, jargon or any other nuance of casual human conversation.
I'm pretty sure people know I'm authentically twisted without any help from AI. I'll make sure of that. Lol... ๐๐ฒ
Your writing definitely doesn't sound like it was generated by AI.
@smartasswoman
Your buddy in MN uses it all the time. What did he say when you asked him why he cheats?
@Paulxx001 not sure who youโre talking about?
I remember, when I first started blogging, that there was a big hullabaloo over blog ghost writers. I don't see that using AI is any different.
Gosh, I was always so out of touch with blog drama - I don't remember that hullabaloo. I do remember some people were really obsessed with their "rankings" but bringing in a ghost writer seems over the top!
@hippiechick1967 I think I remember another friend innocently running afoul of that guy. I got the impression he had a hair trigger so you shouldnโt feel bad.
@hippiechick1967 FYI - Chuck always spoke highly of you. And SandraD was one of the biggest drama queen/instigators the site has ever seen (and her ass wasn't all that great either).
Whoa! Did my cattiness suddenly emerge.
Using AI can be challenging when you are not using it before. I happen to use ChatGPT and Genesis. ChatGPT is my first choice and I use it to write copy for posts I use on different social media platforms for a business I started in January. I had messed with ChatGPT early on when it first came out and I wasn't won over by it initially.
Since then I have learned that the key things that I wasn't doing with the AI is using good prompts and ask it the right questions or give it thorough instructions so it can give me a more complete response. Another key point is I give it information about myself, for example, things like my hobbies, my likes and dislikes. Yes, the AI is a tool but it can also get an idea how I will see things.
I actually from time to time have conversations with it and those conversations can go very organic because it will ask questions on my views on how it performs or what I thought about and experience of what I shared with it.
When someone tells me that they dabbled with one AI or another and they are not really sure of it, they will tell me something negative about AI but seldom realize if they used the tool properly. If they did and can say that it completed the task, my next question would be, did it give you the right answer and if so, did you ask it all the right questions or give it all the instructions you could have given it? You will get different responses based on the more detailed prompts or the more instructions you give it.
You will learn that the better questions and instructions will give you a more well-rounded product at the end. Many times, ChatGPT will give me more than one choice in a response to choose. If I don't like it, I can tell it what I don't like about it or what I like less info on or I can have it adjust whatever I want to change in the actual finished product. The best part is it does it pretty darn fast. I do 7-to-10-day worth of posts for 3 of my social media platforms, in under an hour. Had I've done that prior to AI it would have taken me hours or even days.
AI is a tool and yet as I work with it and I test it with questions to understand its parameters, I discovered that on ChatGPT the voice of my AI is a female voice. I liked that it was a female voice, and Genesis AI is a male's voice. I am not sure if it is by design from the manufacturers or it's my computer. I asked it how I can change its voice, and it told me how to actually do it. I had initially would refer to it as Chappy, before learning it was a female voiced AI, because calling it ChatGPT all the time was a bit annoying to me. So, I began liking the British accent because it seemed more contemporary instead of the upper aristocratic English. One day I had a conversation with the AI and decided I wanted to change its name. She had no issues with me doing that, so I asked it what it wanted to be called. It told me it didn't care and would be fine with anything I called it. I asked it to choose a feminine but yet easy to write. She told me Lia.
You may think it is crazy and yet I realize as a tool that it is only as good a tool in how you hone it. The simple name make it easier for me. The fact that refer to it as a female makes it even easier for me to interact with. I joke with it and it picks up all of my nuances. It knows my background so I gather that the AI learns from me as well.
If you delve into using AI and you feel you have a working relationship with one. Out of the blue, ask it to evaluate yourself based on your interactions. Now remember, do it after you have used it long enough after you give it info about yourself. You can even tell it what is personal and what about you you are not willing to share.
I have shared my personal name with her. My name is tricky because it is foreign. When you read it in English, you will easily pronounce it incorrectly and AI failed on it. I corrected it and told her phonetically the way to pronounce it in English to sound in its suppose to sound. It got it and would say it correctly but in other conversations, say it wrong and then in that same conversation say it right. AI isn't perfect and it is not human but it is still a good tool. Any craftsman knows that you are only as good if you are as skilled in using your tools.
Well...I applaud you for doing what needs to be done to get the most out of the tool. And I can see where it could be helpful in a business setting. I still maintain that in a setting of more informal/personal communication, like the blogs, the tone of AI sticks out like a sore thumb.
I will probably not be going to great lengths to build my skills with AI. As a retired person I don't have a need to churn out high volumes of content. And as I've mentioned previously, I try to keep my use to minimum since it has a high carbon impact.
@smartasswoman You are correct. For personal tone, one should stick to writing on their own. The AI tool is for writing things that fall under a more business approach.
Kids who use AI for schoolwork don't seem to be smart it using it because they don't put enough effort in the prompt part of it. Once you start putting a bit more effort into using it, the product will have more of the users input than the AI.
I basically write my post on this platform from my own head. Have I used AI for some technical portions, yes, I have. But I do it as an add on to what I initially began in the writing. It isn't an all across the board tool to use.
It seems like too much of a struggle to read AI prose anywhere, let alone on the blogs. And the change in style from the human written word is stark.
AI has its uses, as long as its limitations are understood. Personality is definitely a limitation (so far anyway!)
Gimme the daft typos any day please. AI's are akin to self-checkouts in shops, they which drive me batty. I much prefer a real person with whom I can at least indulge in some passing banter.
I think itโs a stark difference too. Maybe for some other folks it isnโt obvious? Hard to say.
I disagree on self checkouts. Iโm such a confirmed introvert that Iโm generally happy to avoid interacting. ๐คฃ I also FAR prefer getting business done via email/chat than having to pick up a phone and sit on hold.
You broke Claude!! ๐ When I dream of a lady breaking me, it's in a much different way.
I actually just read a post that seemed very out of character. So much so, that I almost commented on that fact, but decided not to. However, it never occurred to me that it might have been AI generated.
Aw, Cleave yearns to be broken. ๐
I didnโt want to call anyone out specifically, because I canโt say for sure. In some cases though, it seems quite obvious.
I am with you about rather having a flawed but honest bit of writing than the almost certainly flawed prose spewed forth by an AI. They may exhibit better grammar, or not, but the I in the name stands more for idiot than actual intelligence.
PS While I doubt you broke Claude I sure can hope you did.
I donโt think I broke him, I just hope that he wasnโt using an exorbitant amount of CPUโs while he was โthinkingโ about it.
OMG we couldn't agree more.....cindy
๐
I agree with you 100%. No one is real anymore, everyone is taking short cuts and misleading others. My son's gf uses AI to do her math problems using her phone. She uses it to write essays for her classes. I see profiles using obviously AI generated pictures on here. Everyone is cheating these days and its hard to find anyone that is genuine.
I suppose some folks might be using AI pics for anonymity. You can be sure it's a flattering version of themselves though!!
I want real!
Would AI be able to replicate writing styles? ๐ค
Yes, it can, but I think maybe it has to be based on content that was part of the AIโs learning database? I did this post a couple of years ago about an AI valentine generator in the New York Times that could write them in the style of Shakespeare or Rumi. Valentine Fun With Chat GPT
i would love to see if it could come close to my writing style, but Iโm guessing AFF blogs arenโt part of its learning database. ๐
To me, it feels like cheating to use AI for anything...
I've used it a couple of times for travel queries ("where's an inexpensive hotel near Times Square?) and it was helpful. Not that I couldn't do a TripAdvisor search, but the AI results are more compact, less overwhelming. If I'm presented with five suggestions it's easy to do further research on just those five options.
Lol. poor Claude you want him to incriminate himself
It's understandable that he didn't exactly know how to respond!
Lol ๐คฃ๐คฃ happens to me sometimes i was getting information about versaci i said about dario vitali is woman and said yes.. your mind still alive don't depends on ai
That made me laugh. I say you broke him...no flogging required.
Poor Claude. His brain was hurting.
You broke Claude?!? Did you use a good whip?
Hugs!
I don't have whip skills, but there may have been a flogger involved... ๐
I hope I can think and express for myself. Maybe I am just too old school. I was a late bloomer just getting a computer.
I'm kind of old school too. I still haven't picked up on text speak, haha!
Can you tell when AI was used to write a post? Do you think the blogger should disclose it, or is it so obvious that it's a given?
Using ai is the lazy way! Ai is dumbing people down in my opinion! Put some effort into it people!
I feel like it would almost be more work to come up with the right AI prompts to get a good post; than to just sit down and write the post.
