What else is new? Last weekend I attended Constitutional Observer training. Given that ICE is starting to reduce forces in my area, maybe it's kind of like closing the barn door after the cows are out, but it never hurts to have a review of our constitutional rights. Here are some key ones to remember:
4th Amendment: Right to privacy. Police (or ICE) cannot enter a person's home without either the resident's permission or a warrant signed by a judge.
5th Amendment: Right to remain silent. You can also refuse to sign documents or provide documents.
6th Amendment: Right to seek legal counsel. You have the right to be advised on criminal and immigration consequences.
Constitutional observers do not impede arrests in any way or engage in civil disobedience. They try to inform arrestees of their rights and if possible, to record the arrest. Recordings are forwarded to an organization with legal resources to investigate violations of constitutional rights. I believe at this point the Hennepin County attorney's office and State attorney general are also gathering evidence.
On a sadder note, a good friend's husband died last weekend (or I am assuming so, all I know is that a mutual friend received a text from her saying "John is in ICU with a brain bleed and I'm going to have to let him go" - that mutual friend still hasn't gotten responses to follow-up texts that she sent.) John had a brain aneurysm several years ago which I believe was unable to be completely repaired, so they've kind of been living with a ticking time bomb all these years. 
Another reminder of mortality. Probably time to update my will. The besties and I had an interesting discussion at lunch today, about who in their marriages would be the one to really fall apart if their spouse died first.
I feel like I should try to end on a cheerier note...but, sorry, nothing's coming to me today.

The right to privacy can also extend to your vehicle. If any officer asks to search your vehicle, you may say no. If they are determined, they will get a warrant. Usually it isn't worth their time.
Likewise, do not invite any officer into your home. You stand inside and talk to them as they stand outside. Protect yourself.

Thanks for the extra info about vehicles! ICE doesn't care of course. There have been many incidents of them smashing the car's window and dragging out the driver or passenger through the window.
We were told to remember that it's like vampire - they can only come in if you invite them. I only recently learned about that one when watching the movie Sinners. 😃

As I've said here before the Project 2025 guys are geniuses (though evil ones). They've thought of EVERYTHING. Prior to this, I never even heard of an "administrative warrant"!

Administrative warrants were covered in the presentation. They're not valid! But if the resident doesn't know that....

@smartasswoman They have to be valid for SOME things, or they wouldn't exist. I'm just not sure what they're good for, and what they're not.
I'm sorry about your friend's husband. â¤ï¸ An updated will is always a good thing...you don't have a trust? That Constitutional Observer course sounds kinda cool. It's always good to remind ourselves of how things are supposed to be handled on all sides.

I do not have a trust - I suppose I should read up on that before redoing the will. Anything to make things easier for my niece, who kindly agreed to be my executor.
I agree, I definitely like my cleavage (minimal as it is) better than my ass.

@smartasswoman A trust makes it easier to settle your estate if you have assets over a certain dollar amount...the amount escapes me. Probate can takes months if not years, even if you have a will. A trust avoids probate. And since you don't have any children, it would certainly protect your assets and be sure they go where you'd like them to go.
@MyNameIsKay I think Kay has a point. Best resolved with a team effort, @smartasswoman, me, and Kay. I'm sure the three of us can figure it out and report back to the larger community/

My husband and I talked about who would go first and would the survivor remarry. But since he was chronically ill when we married, the first part was a bit moot. As for remarrying ... he said he would cuz he didn't think he could raise a daughter alone. I said I wouldn't and I was right.
