Muffins:
In THE BATTLE OF WATER, tap water won, with spring, purified and well water coming next in the poll.
It's now the turn of muffins to do battle. Originally I was going to do a poll on cakes. But like biscuits, cheeses and confectionery (that's candy or sweets), I soon realised that such a poll wouldn't work. Not only are there are far too many different cakes to consider, but popular cakes vary widely from country to country. Who outside Britain likes or even has heard of an Eccles cake, a cake named after a Lancashire town in England? A cake poll, if it was to be meaningful, would be only about cakes that Americans eat and I'm not the best person to conduct that poll. So instead I decided focus down and just conduct a poll on muffins as a cake.
This poll is only concerned with American muffins and not with English muffins. English muffins are a type of flatbread whereas American muffins are a type of quickbread. English muffins are made differently than American muffins, they are much flatter in appearance (think crumpets, and who doesn't like a bit of crumpet on the side?), and they tend to be unsweeetened.
Though focusing on American muffins, the poll is only concerned with single flavours of muffins, whether savoury or sweet, and not with combinations of flavours. So there are no banana nut, Black Forest, cheesecake, mint chocolate and pizza muffins as poll options.
I haven't got a clue what the difference is between a muffin and a cupcake (or even a bun), but at a guess I'd say it's about size and shape. But I don't think such a distinction being made will affect voting, so I won't bother distinguishing a muffin from a cupcake. That'll also keep this post shorter!
My favourite flavours of muffins are apple, apricot, banana, blackberry, blackcurrant, caramel, cheese, cherry, chocolate, cinnamon, gooseberry, honey, lemon, nut, orange, plum, poppy seed, raspberry, rhubarb and toffee, with blueberry being my most favourite muffin flavour of muffins - no wonder they're sometimes called 'to die for' muffins! The demand for blueberries is skyrocketing here; supermarkets are struggling to supply the demand.
I do like the Echo Beach hit song by Martha and the Muffins but I guess those Canadian muffins don't count in this poll.
Blueberry muffin:
My least favourite muffin flavours would be many savoury flavours, especially aubergine, beetroot, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, courgette, parsnip, pepper and turnip. If I wanted a savoury muffin, I'd go for an English muffin.
However, the worst flavour for American muffins in my book is coffee; I love to drink but not eat coffee!
What are your most and least favourite flavours of muffins?
Have you ever made your own muffins to eat?
I've never made my own muffins. In fact, I've only ever made one cake in my life, a chocolate potato cake. It was delicious; the added mashed potato gave the chocolate cake moisture without adding to the taste of the cake.
Below is a poll where you can anonymously select your most favourite flavour of muffins. Unfortunately only one pick is allowed in the poll.
Given any food can be put in a muffin, I was struggling to get my longlist of 100 options down to a shortlist of 20 options. Unfortunately there was no room in the poll for: apricot, aubergine/eggplant, avocado/alligator pear, bacon, basic/plain, beetroot/beet, blackberry, blackcurrant, bran, broccoli. Brussels sprout, butterscotch, cabbage, caramel, carrot, cauliflower, celery, chilli/jalapeƱo pepper, chive, cinnamon, coconut, cornbread/corn/sweet corn, courgette/zucchini, cucumber, date, egg, elderflower, fig, fudge, gooseberry, grape, grapefruit, ham, honey, horseradish, Irish soda bread, Kiwifruit/Chinese gooseberry, leek, licorice, lime, loganberry, mango, marshmallow, melon, mint (including peppermint), mushroom, mustard, nougat, oatmeal, onion, papaya, parsnip, passionfruit, pear, pepper/bell pepper, pineapple, plantain, plum (including damson), pomegranate, potato, prawn/shrimp, pulled beef, pulled pork, pumpkin, radish, raisin (including Zante currant), redcurrant, rhubarb, rice, salmon, sausage, sour cream, spinach, star fruit, sultana, sweet potato, tomato, turnip, vanilla (including custard), yam, and yogurt.
I think it'll be a two-way fight between blueberry and chocolate with blueberry just edging the win in the poll. I think banana and lemon will fight it out for third place.
I want to thank @EnigmaInitiative for her advice in compiling this poll. Obviously, any mistakes with the poll are my mistakes unless 'other' wins!
Please see the first comment below to see what has won each battle of the food and drinks so far.
PS. English breakfast tea has belatedly picked up two more votes to overtake green tea and win the THE BATTLE OF THE TEAS. Also barbecue sauce has belatedly picked up two more votes to overtake ketchup and win the THE BATTLE OF THE CONDIMENTS.
