In THE BATTLE OF THE SIDE DISH, salad won, with fries, baked potatoes, mushrooms and bread coming next in the poll.

It's now the turn of pies to do battle. This poll is only about savoury pies; there'll be a separate poll on sweet pies. When's it going to end you may ask!

For the purposes of this post and poll, I'm defining a pie as a baked dish which involves pastry lining the dish, whether the pastry sits at the bottom, a bottom-crust pie, and at the top of the dish, a top-crust pie, or whether the pastry encases the whole pie.

A pie involves pastry dough. For this reason alone, I'm including pizza and quiche as pies but I'm excluding cottage pie and shepherd's pies as true pies. Controversial, maybe!

I've subsumed beef pie as a steak pie and, likewise, a beef and opinion pie as a steak and onion pie.

This poll is only covering pies with a maximum of two combined ingredients. So cheese and onion pie is in, but a cheese, leek and onion pie is out. The exception is a pot pie which is usually a meat pie mixed with a few vegetables.

My favourite savoury pies are beef and onion pie, leek and cheese pie, leek and potato pie, mushroom pie, pizza, quiche, steak and ale pie, steak and mushroom pie, steak and onion pie and vegetable pie, with a Beef Wellington and a Cornish pasty being the savoury pies I most want to tuck into. I can't choose between the two!

There are a few pies I haven't tried. There's no way I'm going to eat a flipper pie (a pie made from seal flippers), lobster pie, mutton pie, rat pie, roadkill pie, stargazey pie (a Cornish pie made with pilchards), umble pie (a pie made with offal) and veal pie. The 'eating humble pie' phrase stems from eating umble pie, a pie once popular in medieval England.

My least favourite savoury pies are chicken and ham pie, chicken pie, goose pie, pork pie and rabbit pie, with steak and kidney pie being the savoury pie I most don't want to tuck into. I don't enjoy eating kidneys after they've been rinsed with urine in a living animal's body!

I've never made a pie, not least because I can't make pastry. All my pies are either bought in a shop or eaten in a restaurant.
