Founded in 1885, Good Housekeeping was launched in America as a family magazine largely aimed at women. Now in different times, it sees itself as a lifestyle magazine and it's one of the world's most popular family/woman's/lifestyle (take your pick) magazines.
The UK editor of Good Housekeeping, Jane Bruton, approached me to appear in a recent issue of the magazine. She didn't approach me via my agent but phoned me instead. She's a good friend of mine; we once had a fling in London but it wasn't serious enough to be included in my series of girlfriends and wives. I hope @YourSassyPussy is taking note! She was a good shag though, Jane Bruton not YourSassyPussy ... and I'm not saying YourSassyPussy isn't a good shag ... I'm sure YourSassyPussy is a better shag than Jane Bruton! I think I need to quickly stop digging a hole for myself!
In the phone call, my good friend Jane Bruton explained to me that, though Good Housekeeping's sales are good, she is worried that its readership is an ageing one. Her idea was to introduce a centrefold like that found in many of the classic porn magazines of the 1970s. I thought her idea was great. She was clearly thinking of Burt Reynolds' centrefold in Cosmopolitan. They're tough shoes to fill!
But Jane Bruton then offered me lots of money, and far more than King Charles and Queen Camilla got for appearing on the magazine's front cover two years ago, for me to be the first centrefold to appear in Good Housekeeping.And then Burt Reynolds' shoes didn't seem so big to fill. I quickly succumbed to her offer as we were just quibbling about a few hairs on our chests!
Obviously I can't post the photo used in the magazine's centrefold as it's not been published yet, but below is one of the outtakes showing 'me' half-naked in a centrefold pose during the Good Housekeeping photoshoot! Despite no hairy chest, I hope you can see how hard with a hose I'm trying to promote good housekeeping! In fact, hairy chests aren't good for good housekeeping, all those germs and you know what!

My Uncle and three of my Aunts were written about in a short article in Good Housekeeping in the 1950’s.
They had decided, once they had good jobs or a well-off husband , to start a pool of money that was kept in a savings account at the local bank.
If one of the participants wanted to use the funds, they had to petition the group for the permission to access the amount they required, and the terms of repayment, if any.
They used it for travel, for down payments on large items, and once, for a lovely spring hat adorned with coral colored flowers, so that the well-off husband could not find out how much it cost.
I hope you've got a copy of that Good Housekeeping issue.

Today I learned that there is a British edition of Good Housekeeping.
My mom was a faithful reader of it when I was growing up.
Before I wrote this post I was totally unaware that it started out as an American magazine. I assumed (wrongly) it was a British magazine as my Mum read it when I was a kid.
I had that Burt Reynolds poster on my bedroom wall!
