Pastry dough:
In THE BATTLE OF THE JAM, strawberry jam won, with raspberry, blackberry, peach, cherry and grape jam coming next in the poll on jams. Raspberries worldwide are demanding a recount and even a re-run of the poll! And oranges worldwide aren't happy as marmalade got no where near the podium. This was perhaps the most controversial poll, and I blame the Americans!
Now it's the turn of pastry to do battle. Or more specifically, it's types of pastry dough that are doing battle. This poll isn't about pastries, like Danish pastries and other pastry-based cakes sold across the world. The poll is solely concerned about different types of pastry dough. A pastry is made from dough with other savoury or sweet ingredients added to the dough before baking.
Pastry can be traced back to the Ancient Egyptian times, and it was popular in Ancient Greek and Roman times.
Pastry can be served in a savoury meal (eg cheese and onion slice, Jamaican beef patty, mushroom vol-au-vent, pepperoni pizza, quiche Lorraine, sausage pinwheels, spanakopita, steak pie, and tartiflette tart) and in a sweet meal (eg apple pie, Black Forest gateau, blueberry cheesecake, chocolate cake, custard tart, fruit flan, jam doughnut, strawberry cheesecake, and tiramisu). Pastry can be served in a variety of ways whether crumbled, cobbled, laminated, latticed or even strudelled!
But as I've mentioned, it's different types of pastry dough that this poll is concerned with. Though no pastry expert, as far as I'm aware and after extensive (well, some) internet research, there are only at most seven different types of pastry dough. The seven pastry doughs are choux pastry (used in éclairs and profiteroles), filo pastry (baklava and samosas), flaky pastry (sausage rolls and vanilla custard slices), hot water crust pastry (pork pies and raised chicken & ham pies), puff pastry (bacon & cheese puff pastry tartlets and beef Wellington), shortcrust pastry (cherry pies and Cornish pasties), and suet pastry (meat dumplings and suet puddings).
So this poll is very different compared to the previous other poll. Rather than the customary 20 poll options, there are only eight options covering the seven types of pastry dough plus the dreaded but methodologically necessary 'other'.
My most favourite types of pastry are filo pastry (particularly found in baklava), puff pastry (beef Wellington is scrummy) and shortcrust pastry (especially served up in fruit pies with lashings of custard), with choux pastry being the best. Chocolate profiteroles are to die for!

My least favourite type of pastry is suet pastry, especially if it's used in a steak and kidney pudding. Kidneys unsurprisingly taste like urine!

I've never attempted to make pastry which I guess means I have no confidence at attempting to make pastry. I think I can do the pastry dough thing but I think it would all fall flat when I baked my offering! For that reason alone, I buy my pastry ready-made as part of a ready-made cake, pie or whatever. Sometimes others are best left to make things. And that includes pasta, cakes and cars!
My Mum, like many mothers, regularly made pastry. Her offerings would always turn out good. I used to love eating her uncooked pastry offcuts sprinkled with sugar!
I like many savoury and sweet pastry dishes, whether cakes, doughnuts, flans, pasties, pies, pizzas, tarts and vol-au-vents, but not cheesecakes.

I'm just surprised flaky pastry is easily winning the poll.
On occasion, I’ll make apple pie, but I’ll make pie crust using an American recipe and not French. The former is much less work. But for the most part, I buy the pies.
I buy pies too. I've not made a pie in the culinary sense!
I try to stay away from breads and pastries, so none for me.
