One abiding feature at the parties that my partner and I hosted was a split between those who played early and those who didn't play or played late.
As the host, I couldn't have relax until the last couple had arrived, and because of no-shows it wasn't at all clear who the last couple was going to be. Our parties started at 7pm and we asked couples to arrive no later than 8pm. I used to see 9pm as the cut-off point when I could relax.
Also as the host, like my partner as the hostess, we'd spend a lot of time talking to our guests, taking their coats, fixing them drinks and introducing them to other couples. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this role not least because I could talk to anyone. No one ignores the hosts. But I'd invariably get separated from my partner, which is why we had a rule of not having to play in the same room unlike the rule we had when meeting another couple.
There was a pattern, I'm not saying deliberate, at our parties that my partner would be upstairs having sex with the beautiful people while I was downstairs entertaining the unwashed. I know my language is a bit extreme, but let me give you an example (and I know one example doesn't prove a general rule).
At one party, there was a couple who let's say weren't stereotypically attractive, and they were much older than other couples, but my partner and I got on with them and had sex with them whenever we met up.
I was chatting with this couple downstairs and they noticed that a lot of people, including my partner, had disappeared. They were upstairs having sex. I invited them to come up upstairs with me to see where the sexual action was. The man declined my offer, but the woman wanted to see what was going on upstairs. I offered her my hand and led her upstairs.
There were two bedrooms upstairs. In the first bedroom there was one couple having sex, maybe partners and maybe not. In the second bedroom we entered, there were about four couples, plus my partner, having sex in a very mingling way. We were shooed away.
So away we went downstairs to the lounge where I had sex with the woman while her partner watched.

Toward the end of the party, one of the beautiful people who was having sex upstairs explained that they were okay for me to join in but not the woman to join in with sexual proceedings. This is what I mean about the beautiful people upstairs and the unwashed downstairs. I was happy to be part of the unwashed, not least because there was a chance of dirty sex!

Beauty & attractiveness is such a subjective thing. I am attracted to a certain look & conversely not attracted to certain looks too. There are far greater influences in determining my attraction to an individual than sheer looks alone, although they do play a part.
As for being rejected on looks alone I couldn't say with any surety. I have had my fair share of knock-backs though.
As you rightly say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But having said that, I'd argue that beauty is also culturally and historically framed.
@spunkycumfun ... I totally agree with you. As a non-conformist, I tend to look for beauty elsewhere and not in the magazines, runway models & social media influencers. In fact, the people in those groups, they all look the same to me.
@FionaRing Social media influencers do look very similar to each other.
I have never been turned down or turned away. Honestly that would probably hurt my feelings. Which is unfair because I have told people no. I don't play in public.

what I have found is that if someone is confident and socially adept, other folks will be more likely to overlook that they’re not the best looking person at the party. On the other hand, being socially awkward is kinda the kiss of death (and there is no shortage of those kind of people in the kink community).
I'd much sooner be with a woman who is confident and self-assured than one who is stereotypically attractive.
