My partner and I met a couple from Scunthorpe, quite a way from us. We met halfway in a hotel in Retford for a meal. We were the first couple that they had met. We were the corrupters!
After the meal, during which the conversation sparkled, we decided to corrupt and invite the couple back to our hotel bedroom. The couple quickly accepted our invitation: I think they wanted to be corrupted!
In our bedroom, we swapped partners and had sex, bareback sex. We didn't insist on condoms and we didn't insist on condoms. Sex was good, very good or so my partner and I thought. But the couple soon left the site after meeting us! Perhaps we were too corrupting. Sometimes couples like the idea of swinging in principle but not in practice. And sometimes couples see swinging as a solution to their relationship difficulties, but in reality swinging will only magnify their problems.

What does safe sex mean to you?
Our policy on condoms was flexible, some may say too flexible. If a couple wanted condoms to be used, this was not a problem.
Occasionally we would insist on condoms if the other couple were very active swingers and if we didn't know the couple that well.
Quite often, we'd know the other couple quite well and there'd be a discussion about condoms and testing for STIs. My partner and I got regularly tested as a matter of routine. And normally we wouldn't meet couples who were active swingers because we were social and not functional swingers.
Obviously my partner and I took risks. Condom sex is safer than bareback sex. Sex with a single regular partner is safer than sex with multiple irregular partners.
But we decided to manage rather than eliminate the risks.
There's no such thing as safe sex, apart from no sex. There's a risk with condom sex, and there's a risk with non-penetrative sex. Kissing and oral sex are far from risk-free, especially with regard to herpes. For my partner and I, we accepted we took risks but we felt they were managed risks. Neither of us contracted a STI during our swinging times; maybe we got lucky, maybe not.

I know tests don't protect but it's better to regularly test than not regularly test if one is having sex with multiple partners. Sometimes I did use condoms; it would depend on the situation.

No ... not latex! Always use non-latex condoms, especially with a new partner. I worked for a gynecologist and the number of women who came in with inflamed vaginas, due to an unknown latex allergy, was incredible.
@superbjversion2 latex allergies about 1 percent of the total population. If frequent exposure could be as high as 8 percent. So those making living on back and medical workers may have higher percentage. Other materials might be effective but are not as effective as latex and significant higher rates of failure

@superbjversion2 not dismissive, just a fact. Number slightly high as US total population around 360 million including underage and those not interested in sex, those who are completely monogamous. So population affected probably around 20 million in USA. More than 2 percent have a peanut allergy so avoid the small nuts. Not using is why VD of all types in an accelerated growth phase.

I also don't understand the people who say "I'll use a condom the first few times, but then I usually stop". Even if you trust that the other person isn't having sex with anyone else (and I wouldn't, that early in the relationship) if they haven't been tested and they have an STI, it's not going to magically go away by having sex three times.
In the UK, STI testing is free, easy to access and takes very little time to get results. There are walk-in clinics in most cities. The question isn't why would you, the question is why the hell wouldn't you!?!?

The sex that I've been having for the last wee (big) while has been ultra-safe, the only danger being that I might pull my willy off!
I've always had difficulty in reaching completion whenever I've been sheathed, but I've rarely left a partner unsatisfied or been left unsatisfied.
After a while trust might come into play, testing might be a pre-requisite of that. It's all about communication leading up to that.
Sexually transmitted diseases are proliferating once again, with some oldies like gonorrhea and chlamydia making a strong comeback. If I was still active I'd be taking precautions.
And thanks for clarifying. Other than an occasional fantasy and a very early couple of experiences, swinging has never appealed to me, one of those things that will always remain a fantasy. Sad but true, but the prospect of exchanging bodily fluids with people I don't know well enough just doesn't appeal. I wonder how much of an outlier I am on this site . . .

ps - whenever I happen on an article about sexual infections it always seems to note that rates in our age group are increasing exponentially . . . for me, there's not necessarily a stigma to go with having been infected in the past, or carrying some of the common viral infections, it's more that I don't want one, and some of them are not only forever, they're downright dangerous. I don't think good practice is promoted enough on this site.
@lindoboy100 My impression is that swingers are a minority, though perhaps a significant minority, here. And I'm not sure there is a dominant group in terms of sexual preferences. Clearly there are many who are into BDSM, whether light or heavy stuff, and there are some who enjoy the cuckold lifestyle (which is definitely not my cup of tea). And there are many who are looking for an extramarital affair and many who just want a shag tonight!

@lindoboy100 I've read about increasing STI rates among older people, especially those in the swinging lifestyle. I agree with you the site could do far more to promote sex. I once blogged about STIs in which I claimed that STIs are a bit of a taboo topic on the site.

Yep, it looks that way. There are a few brave souls who openly declare it, but otherwise it remains taboo. We need to remove the stigma. I've had a bacterial infection in the past and have tested a few times subsequently, though not for a long time - no need nowadays!! 🤣

My attitude toward condoms has two sides: pregnancy and health. Since, when I was a fertile woman, I didn’t use the contraceptive pill, during my fertile days penetrative sex was, obviously, with condoms. The rest of the time, my rule is simple: I never have sex of any kind with a man whose sexual health I don’t trust, or whom I suspect of being dishonest. That’s why, in most cases, I don’t use protection; though with strangers, there’s always a brief and honest talk about it first. Of course, the way I handle this issue is far more nuanced than this summary, but that’s the essence of it. It’s a complex and delicate matter, and I certainly don’t want anyone to take my way of doing things as advice.
Trust is so important about discussions of condoms and the like. I struggle to get my head around femidoms; they look like a passion-killing fiddle!
They are necessary at times but for the most part I don't have the need for them. As I didn't have a lot of partners back in my day.

Condoms are necessary in many situations. Looking back, I was probably playing it too risky but got away with it. That's not condoning what I did.

Generally though the pattern is protection for the first few times, then we're done with it. A variation to the "3-date rule" perhaps! 😁
I too take the view that condoms are best at the start but once you've got to know someone then I use my best judgement to stick with condoms or not. Obviously my partner has a big say in proceedings.
