Missed it!
And you would have won! Another one coming up soon.
There's a sucker born every minute.
No P T Barnum, though he is credited with it. And, the full quote is "There's a sucker born every minute, and two to take him"
Thanks for that information. Do you know who said the quote?
@spunkycumfun, I used to have a website for someone who chased down the origins of quotes and sayings, but that was several computers ago.
According to a google search "There's a sucker born every minute":
David Hannum: One theory suggests the phrase was actually said about Barnum by David Hannum, a New York banker and rival showman. During the "Cardiff Giant" hoax, Barnum created a replica of Hannum's 'original' fossilized giant, and people continued to pay to see Barnum's version even after both were proven fakes. Hannum allegedly used the phrase to describe Barnum's customers.
Con Man Joseph "Paper Collar Joe" Bessimer: A New York police inspector from the era attributed the phrase to this notorious confidence trickster, who reportedly said, "There's a sucker born every minute, but none of them ever die".
Earlier Variations: The core idea existed in print even before Barnum was born. A similar phrase, "there's a fool born every minute," appeared in an English magazine in 1806, referring to it as an old saying.
Looking up the "full quote", google replied:
The full quote, as it is commonly known, is "There's a sucker born every minute, and two to take him."
The phrase actually appeared in print years before Barnum's death and is generally believed to have been said by a New York saloonkeeper and confidence man named David Hannum, in reference to people who were taken in by Barnum's purchase of the "Feejee Mermaid" exhibit [1].
@mwants269 Thanks for this. There are a few websites that track down the origins of quotes. The Quote Investigator is a good one, and there's also Snopes and Wikipedia.
@spunkycumfun Quote Investigator is the one I think I was thinking of.
@mwants269 It's a good site, or at least it appears an authoritative site.
I used to tell folks that P. T. Barnum wrote about the life cycle of the octopus. When someone showed curiosity at that statement, I'd say "He always said that there was a sucker born every minute"
Below are the correct answers in parentheses after the quotation.

I don't feel like answering them all - your quizzes are too much work! π
I'll just say that #3 is Lou Reed, Walk on the Wild Side, a great song.
They're quite a lot of work setting them, especially getting the correct attribution to the quotes!
