Apple pie with vanilla ice cream:
In THE BATTLE OF JELLY, cherry jelly won, with strawberry, lime, blackberry, grape and orange jelly coming next in the poll on jelly/jello.
Now it's the turn of dessert accompaniments to do battle. This poll is about anything, whether a sauce, a dip, a sprinkle or a dollop, that is added to a cold or hot dessert dish before eating. I know one's favourite dessert accompaniment will depend greatly on the dessert being eaten, but this poll is asking you to compare accompaniments before selecting your favourite dessert accompaniment.
Anything goes in this poll provided it's added to a dessert. I've even found out that Americans sometimes add peanut butter to desserts. Whatever next?! I must admit I often use slices of cucumber as a dessert accompaniment! Only kidding.
Desserts are sometimes called sweets or puddings here in Britain, and somewhat confusingly confectionery (what Americans call candy) are often called sweets here. In some restaurants, there's a sweet trolley fully of scrummy desserts to choose.
My most favourite dessert accompaniments are biscuit crumbs, blackberry coulis, brandy butter, butterscotch sauce, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, cocoa powder, cream (but not the synthetic squirty cream that's popular here in Britain), ginger (on a sliced honeydew melon), lemon juice (on a pancake), nutmeg (on a rice pudding), raspberry coulis, raspberry jam (on a rice, semolina or tapioca pudding), syrup (on a pancake) and vanilla ice cream (especially with a hot fruit pie), with custard (a thick vanilla-flavoured sauce) being the best dessert accompaniment.
Though custard is best served hot, cold custard is still good (especially in an English trifle). I get the impression, though I could be wrong, that custard is not that popular beyond British shores. But it's a brilliant sauce, whether hot or cold. (Rhubarb and custard sweets are popular here, well at least they used to be in my day. These sweets aren't desserts but confectionery, candies if you like - the English language is confusing sometimes!)
Apple pie with custard:
My least favourite dessert accompaniments are sprinkles, with pumpkin sauce being the worst dessert accompaniment. There's just no point to a pumpkin bar for being a Halloween decorative object.
What are your most and least favourite dessert accompaniments?
Do you ever choose a dessert because of its accompaniment?
Have you tried custard, and if so, do you like it?
At a restaurant I will often choose a dessert because of its accompaniment. Custard and ice cream scream very loudly from the menu in my book, and the main dessert becomes their accompaniment!
Below is a poll where you can anonymously select your most favourite dessert accompaniment. Unfortunately only one pick is allowed in the poll. If you don't like any dessert accompaniments, please don't vote but please do comment even just to say you don't like dessert accompaniments. Shame on you!
Because a poll on this site can only have a maximum of 20 answer options, unfortunately there was no room as poll options for: apricot sauce, banana sauce, blackberry jam/jelly, blueberry sauce, brandy butter/sauce, butterscotch sauce, cherry jam/jelly, cherry sauce, chocolate spread, cinnamon, cocoa powder, coffee ice cream, ginger, gooseberry sauce, grape jam/jelly, honey, lemon curd, lemon juice, lime sauce, mango sauce, marmalade, marshmallow, melon sauce, meringue, milk (including condensed milk, dulce de leche and evaporated milk), mint ice cream, nutmeg, orange sauce, peach jam/jelly, peach sauce, peanut butter, pear sauce, pineapple sauce, pistachio ice cream, plum sauce, pumpkin sauce, raspberry jam/jelly, rhubarb sauce, salted caramel ice cream, sugar, and yogurt. But there's always the 'other' option for those not listed in the poll. Hopefully I've covered all the popular dessert accompaniments as poll options because I never want 'other' to win a poll.
I think vanilla ice cream will win, but cream, custard and something chocolate may run it close in the poll.
Once again, I want to thank @EnigmaInitiative for her help in compiling this poll. (You can't keep her away!) Obviously, any mistakes with the poll are my mistakes unless 'other' wins!
Please see the first comment below to see what has won each battle of the food and drinks so far.

For apple pie, a hunk of cheddar cheese. It's a New England thing.
Now that's a new combination to me.
@spunkycumfun Like I said, it's pretty much just a new england thing.
@gnarishnakh I can just see it working though I'm not sure I'd order the dish at a restaurant.
@spunkycumfun Small mon & pops here in NE might understand, but no big restaurant will. Usually this combo is served right after turkey dinner.
@gnarishnakh I'm usually too stuffed after roast turkey dinner to eat a dessert.
@LovingOral1964 Interesting, I like my apple pie cold, especially if I'm having it a la mode, the contrast in temperatures I enjoy. But the cheese should be cold and sharp, and bitten off along with the bite of pie.
@LovingOral1964 I've never come across apple pie with melted cheese here. I obviously need to get out more!
Normally nothing, but occasionally a little warm chocolate fondant: chocolate sauce… although there’s nothing quite like a glass of Baileys without ice to go with a dessert. But not poured over him!
You take that ‘pairing’ directly from the glass.
I should have included Baileys in the poll just for you.
Baileys works well
I'm a plain vanilla guy (at least with desert) Smooth and creamy
Vanilla is a great taste, one of the best tastes in the world.
Hot white chocolate sauce over anything cold, it also goes really well with salted caramel sauce. Don't really have a sweet tooth for desserts though.
I've never had hot white chocolate sauce. I love a dessert especially if involves custard.
That's a lot to swallow. When in Germany and get some apple strudel. Be shure to get the white or vanilla sauce. Is more like custard. Possibly best add on ever
Any sauce with vanilla in it gets called custard here.
What are your most and least favourite dessert accompaniments? Most fav is lemon sauce. I just can't resist the citrus. Least fav would be anything coffee flavored or nuts.
Do you ever choose a dessert because of its accompaniment? Yes!!!
Have you tried custard, and if so, do you like it? Yes, I have made custard in various flavors. A good custard is Heavenly. A bland custard is meant for the dogs, LOL.
I love drinking coffee, but I don't like eating anything coffee-flavoured with the exception of tiramisu.
Gotta love hot apple pie with ice cream 😁
Apple pie was made for ice cream!
Nutmeg sprinkled on rice pudding gives it a flavor burst to offset the sweetness.
Nuts on nothing, I’d rather not have them. The fruit sauces sound yummy.
Nutmeg on rice pudding is divine.
I did vote other as Whipped Cream would be it for me with most desserts. Another great battle here my friend and I hope your enjoying your weekend..
Whipped cream goes with nearly all desserts.
